On the Bookshelf: a catch up

It's been too long since I've shared a book post...

MockingJay - All I can say is, if you haven't read the Hunger Games Trilogy you need to get your buns to the store ASAP.

A Thousand Splendid Suns - Confession:  I've only read half of this book.  Somehow I lost it on the way back to OKC from Thanksgiving.  I mean, I read it ON the way home and haven't seen it since.  Weird.  But, the first half was really really good.  And I look forward to getting my hands on another copy and finishing it.

Pretty Little Liars - Another young adult book!  3 of my (adult) friends are reading the book series and I recently joined the crew.  I've heard the series on ABC Family is really good too.  So far, the book is a little creepy and I can't read it right before bed (I was warned) but during the day, I really like the story lines of each girl and look forward to solving THE mystery.

I'm always looking for new reads if anyone has any suggestions!  I try to switch between young adult and big kid books.

  1. I know I've recommended this before and it may not be necessarily what you are looking for, but I really LOVED 'Redeeming Love' by Francine Rivers. Seriously, one of my go to love stories.

Another one I have posted about before, 'Bet Me' by Jennifer Crusie. One of my favorite books of all time, hands down. Probably because I can relate to Min though (leading lady). I think you might enjoy it as well. Jennifer Crusie's wit reminds me a lot of Jennifer Weiner's.

The book I'm grabbing next is Water for Elephants (most likely reading on the plane to Oz). Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson are coming out in this movie so I want to read the book first. Heard it's a good one as well.

    Pretty Little Liars sounds fun!

  2. Also, Hunger Games= TOTALLY AWESOME AWESOME-NESS.

Have you heard any info on the rumor of making it into a movie?

  3. Sam referred The Hunger Games to me! I just picked up the first book yesterday! I'm like you, I love reading too. I have read the first two Pretty Little Liar books, and I loved them! The series on ABC is GOOD, and it follows book one almost exactly at the beginning of the season.

My friend I visited in Phoenix was reading Water for Elephants, and she said it was good so I'll second Sam's recommendation!

If you've never read In Her Shoes by Jennifer Weiner, I loved it. Another one is Wifey by Judy Blume (if you liked her as a kid, she's got a few adult books that are good, and this is one of them)

Last summer, I also enjoyed reading The Dating Game by Danielle Steel and A Painted House by John Grisham (A Painted House is different from his other books, and is set in the early 1900s when farms would hire sharecroppers)

The Janet Evanovich series (One for the Money, Two for the Dough, etc.) are really funny mystery-type books.

And I liked the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants series enough to read them a few times (Young Adult).

Sorry, I don't have one specific genre that I enjoy more than others, so my book recommendations are always all over the place. But I would love to share recommendations back and forth because I love reading as well!

And thank you for taking the time to look at my page! Purple is my favorite color, so I wanted other colors to compliment that :)

  4. Hunger Games movie is totally happening...2013 release date. Suzanne Collins is going to be one of the screenwriters, so it should be very close to the books! They're thinking of casting an unknown as Katniss!

    Books I'd recommend:
Phillipa Gregory wrote on all the women of Tudor England (she wrote The Other Boleyn Girl, which was made into a movie). I read the books in chronological order, starting with Katherine of Aragon, and they go all the way through Queen Elizabeth. Very good reads, not completely historically accurate, but fun historical fiction!

I read the Vampire Diaries books, very good YA books. Also by the same author (LJ Smith), the Dark Visions trilogy.

    Books on my to-read list:
    - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - I've started it, but having a hard time getting into it
    - The Maze Runner series
    - I Am Number Four (movie comes out this Feb.), supposedly the first of a 6-book series
    - The Mortal Instruments series (3 published, 3 more coming over the next two years)
    - And for non-YA, Devil in the White City

  5. Alyssa- Thanks for the Hunger Games info!!! How stinkin' exciting :)
I loved reading your recommendations! I'm a HUGE Tudor era person so I need to check that out.

And Kendra, I second her Girl With The Dragon Tattoo suggestion (not sure why I didn't think of that!) I'm reading it, along with a few others at the moment. Kinda dark but very suspenseful and good. If you can handle Pillars of the Earth though you can handle almost anything!

  6. Mal- Thanks for yours too! I need all the suggestions I can get. My flight to Oz is gonna be a LONG, LONG, LONG flight... I need as many books as my eyes can stand, ha. Gonna look into the Dating Game.

  9. Yay Sam! I'm glad I could pique your interest in a couple of books as well...I was told a lot of Danielle Steel's books are good, but that was the first one I picked up and I enjoyed it.

Kendra, keep us updated on the ones you end up loving. Like I said, I love getting recommendations too! I'd like to see what others think of books.

As far as Alyssa's to-read about The Maze Runner series, I've been recommended those a couple times.

AND, I also remembered (if you haven't read them already), the House of Night series by P.C. & Kristin Cast are good Young Adult books if you like vampire stories. It's set in Tulsa, so it mentions things like Cascia Hall and Utica Square. The first one is titled "Marked," and they all have similar one-word titles.

My uncle also recommended Dean Koontz to me this past weekend.

  10. I loved a thousand splendid suns! Have you read the Kite Runner? It was his first novel and I actually enjoyed it more than the latter. So so good! My little sister is obsessed with Pretty Little Liars, I may have to pick it up soon :)
